You have to take around the obligatory house warning present and as there tends to be a party it cannot just be a bottle of wine to share and try not to spill on the new carpets. Typical presents can be a bit expensive so many question if is still okay to take food as a present? If you look back even 10 years people took the new neighbours freshly bakes pies and I’m sure the tradition goes back further than that. But in modern society when we are so gadget focused is it still okay to take baking as a present?

Looking online at house warming presents there really isn’t much to choose from, you have your ‘home sweet home’ signs and their variations along with other nick knackers that you probably wouldn’t want anyone to buy you. Of course you can take the traditional present stand by the photo collage but it does seem a bit egotistical to give them pictures of you for their new home. So unless you know they need something practical, like larger wine glasses or plates, is it so wrong to take food around?

I guess that the tradition of taking food started when everyone had agars and they took days to warm up, a nice hot meal after the stress of moving is just the thing you need and couldn’t get unless someone else cooked it for you. So the neighbourly welcome with food probably meant a lot more than it would today, or does it? In a society where everything is convenient does the fact that you took the time to bake their favourite cake, brownie or sweet thing mean more than just ducking in to a shop to grab whatever is nearest to hand that seems to be an appropriate present?

It is strange to think only a few years ago picking a new radiator was a simple business. You simply went to the store and picked the right length white, rectangular radiator made of cast iron or stainless steel. This was all that was on offer to the public.

Now it seems that radiators are as much for an accessory to any room as cushions and mirrors are and the market has exploded with new concepts. All of this means if you are looking for a new radiator you can have your pick from a huge range of styles, colours and even materials! However there is more to picking a radiator than just choosing the style that suits your room, these are one of the most important elements of any central heating system and there are a number of procedures you need to follow.

First off you need to confirm whether you have a direct or indirect heating system as well as how much heat each room will need. This sounds complicated but there are calculators online to help you work this out, or any plumber would be able to tell you.

Then you need to work out where exactly you want to place the radiators in each room. These should be placed to get the maximum use out of it and as such it is typical to place them in the coldest part, traditionally the external wall under a window meaning any cold air coming in will be heated up. Modern double glazing tends to make this less important so check your existing piping and place your new radiator where there is least pipe work required.

Finally it is worth noting at this point that double radiators do not in fact produce as much heat as two single radiators, it is important to note if installing new radiators in a large room.

When it comes to sizing curtains it is really a straightforward procedure, although many people get it very wrong. Often you’ll see curtains hanging over radiators and I just want to shout what a waste of heat! Any heat produced will be trapped behind the curtain and go straight out so really there is no point to the radiator at all. Here’s how to size up a curtain.
The width of a curtain is exceptionally straightforward so there is no excuse to have curtains that don’t shut out the full window. If you have a curtain rail fitted already you simply measure from one end of the curtain rail to the middle, include and include any overlaps. If you don’t yet have a pole fitted then measure across the window and add a little to each side to get the width of the curtain pole.
The length of the curtain is very much down to personal choice, except where there is a radiator below the window! For a rough guide if you want window sill length curtains measure from the pole down to around 1cm above the window sill, if you want curtains that hang just below the sill measure from the pole down to the window sill. For full length curtains that touch the floor measure from the pole down to around 1cm above the floor.
It is important to remember that the type of heading you have on your curtains have an effect on the length you want them to be. Here are the most popular types. For eyelets measure the curtain length as you would normally, that is from the pole down to the length you want the curtain to hang to and add 4cms on to the length. The important thing to remember when picking eyelets for headings is that there is no room for alterations so you need to have the correct measurements. Pencil pleats are another commonly used curtain heading, for these remember to start your measurement from the eye of the curtain ring or just above the track down to the desired length.

If character phones are not for you then there are other iconic styles available, why not treat yourself to a shoe with killer heels to arrange your night out, a shiny purse or even a lipstick.

If you are really looking to let your character shine through in your phone why not pick one that relates to a hobby of yours, instrument phones are popping on to the market at a fast rate, why not pick up a guitar or cello. There are even phones available in fast food styles, such as a hamburger or soft drink. Or if you are looking for something a bit more traditional why not go for a phone with actual dials on it for that retro feel.

No matter what your tastes are there is a phone out there to suit your mood and style, so head online today and be so spoilt for choice you’ll want to keep swapping them every few days just so you can have them all!

There are some fantastic ways to brighten up your home and one of the easiest ways to do this is through flower arranging. There are some basics that every good flower arranger needs to know, here are some top tips.

The first thing is to choose the right foam for the flowers, in general the green water retaining foam is for fresh flowers and the stiff brown foam is suitable for dried or artificial flowers

The second tip is to soak the foam in a bucket, if you do it under a tap it can leave dry spots which are not only detectable but also can cause stems to wilt.

If you are doing a traditional arrangement always cut the foam 1 inch higher than the rim of the container. This means that you can arrange the flowers in a more natural looking arrangement with stems flowing down the side and front of the container. If the foam is at the same level you can only arrange your stems upwards giving them a stiff and unnatural look.

Tip number four is to make sure when you are pushing the stems of your flowers in to the foam make sure the bottom of the stem is always in contact with it. What this basically means is don’t pull the stem up even if it comes out of the bottom, simply start a new hole as you don’t want air pockets below then stem.

It may sound obvious but make sure the foam is kept wet; the flowers use the water stored in the foam and will wilt once this dries out.

If you find your foam fills the rim of the container you are using there is no room to add water without it spilling out. There is an easy solution to this, cut a v shaped notch in to the foam before putting it in to the container; this will allow you to add water without it spilling over.

This week I’ve been thinking about mirrors, I was wandering around the house as I had something in my eye but could I find one! It was quite a painful experience but I eventually located one on the bathroom. This got me thinking that maybe I should invest in some more mirrors for the house.

Taking a wander around Ikea I was quite surprised to find out just how many different mirrors you can actually get. Not only can you get the traditional square or rectangle mirrors that look great in the living room or hall way you can also have circular ones that look great in hall ways. There are a great variety of mirrors that are available for the bathroom, for something a bit different why not look at mirror tiles to create a mirrored wall.

The bedroom is a great place for mirrors, not only can you have a full length mirror or mirrored wardrobes. You can also get some amazing shapes of mirrors such as tear drops and flowers.

The frames you can get for mirrors are as fantastic as the mirrors themselves. Everything from extravagant bejewelled mirrors to simplistic under rated silver frames, there are some intricately carved wooden frames that are available.

The humble mirror is more than just a talking point in a room, correctly placed it can bring extra light in to any room making it feel more spacious and airy than it actually is. They do this by reflecting the natural light that comes through windows and bouncing it back creating the illusion of a spacious and light room. Mirrors are best placed in small room that maybe don’t get as much light as they need in order to make them habitable. Plus they have the advantage of letting you see if you have anything in your eye!

So with the snow coming down heavily my winter spring clean is well under way but I’ve come across the main problem all cleaners have. Lack of space to put everything. But there are so amazing storage solutions out there, everything ranging from photo boxes with storage for makeup to futons with storage spaces for throws, cushions and magazines. There are certain rooms that storage solutions are easy to find for, the kitchen is the perfect place for old fashioned storage jars and boxes, the living room has its futons and storage chairs, the bathroom has its cute wicker boxes and mirrored cupboards.

But what about the bedroom? Yes you can get large storage chests and wicker baskets for washing if you are lucky enough to have a big enough room if not there are some amazing beds out there with storage solutions. You can get beds with drawers in the bases and those with mattresses that lift up. you can also get some amazing storage systems for wardrobes, but what do you do with all those clothes that you’ve worn once so don’t want to put back in the wardrobe but also aren’t worn enough to wash? That is my main storage problem with the bedroom, I did contemplate a chair but with two cats in the house you can imagine just where they will end up sleeping! But I have come across an amazing solution and it is so simple and cheap I can’t believe it’s not all over the market.

What is this wonder item? Well it is quite straight forward; it is a coat hanger with hoops linked under it. Simple isn’t it! Sounds quite simple and unimaginative but it is a life saver, not only does it keep my clothes away from the cat fluff but they are also kept crease free! Either hook your tops, scarves or leggings through the hoops or hang up trousers and dresses on coat hangers and pop on the hoops or the links in between. Such a simple solution but it is a fantastic way to store clothes.

It’s almost that time, spring cleaning is practically upon us. This can be quite a stressful time if you aren’t prepared for it. It may seem like an antiquated notion to have a yearly clear out but it can be quite a therapeutic event, out with the old and in with all the new stuff. I often find it is best to do this slightly early to help clear up after the Christmas period. We all seem to collect a lot of stuff over this period and it is good to have a clear out once this is over, giving you a fresh start for the new year in a clear and tidy house.

When it comes to spring cleaning it is best to do it in a systematic fashion, attack one room at time armed with a whole army of cleaning products and new storage boxes. Spring cleaning is no time to be sentimental, you need to be ruthless otherwise you’ll hold on to a load of items you won’t look at for a year that take up space you need for items you actually need.

This year I’ve chosen wicker baskets as my storage system of choice, I find it is best to buy these in advance so you have an idea of where everything can go once you’ve tidied. I’ve picked wicker this year as it will be suitable to be used throughout the house and not just as storage boxes, you can buy wicker furniture to help co-ordinate a room, a wicker chair for example is a great addition to a room and despite expectations is actually quite comfy. Wicker boxes come in all different sizes, you can get small ones to fit in corners and larger chest sized ones for storing clothes or bedding. You can even get wicker laundry baskets to fit in with the theme.

The Christmas season is well and truly upon us. The tree is up and decorated with lovely seasonal berries and cones, though I must admit I did give in and put a few bits of ‘real’ tinsel on it. The presents are wrapped, slightly haphazardly as the cats kept getting involved, but the overall effect is definitely festive and has got me in the mood for Christmas.

Instead of putting my feet up and congratulating myself on a job well done I’ve turned my attention to the christmas table. As I have family descending on me this year I’m having to do more than turn up clutching presents and a few bottles and I’m determined to make a success of it. The food will have to wait until a bit closer to the actual day, giving me time to build up to facing the shops and the masses within them, but I did think I could do something with the table before then. Now I’m not a fan of those plastic tablecloths you see on most tables for family events, don’t get me wrong they are an asset at keeping the amount of clearing up you have to do to a minimum something I am a big fan of! But they seem to be rather bland and samey, that is why I’ve been working on crocheting a tablecloth. Before you throw your hands up in horror at the thought of cleaning christmas dinner off wool don’t worry I have got a plastic sheet to go over it. The pattern I’m using is classed as pineapple and I have to say I’m quite enjoying doing it, so much so if I get this done in time I might make some placemats out of chunkier wool which can be thrown away if they won’t wash out.

This pattern I find great if you are looking to do big areas quickly, it grows so rapidly that you can easily get a big tablecloth in just a few weeks, perfect if you tend to leave these things to the last minute like I do!

This is partly because they alleviate much of the stress involved in this process as well as providing useful advice for prospective purchasers. Buying a home overseas can be even more difficult and stressful than purchasing within the UK, making online resources that can improve this situation, even more important. These are three of the top online resources for those thinking of purchasing a home overseas.

Global Property Guide

This site, which is located at the website address www.globalpropertyguide.com is one of the biggest property portals in Europe and offers not only information about available properties across the world, but also a host of other useful information which anyone looking to buy overseas needs to know about – including information concerning taxation and legal issues for each country.

Find a Property

This online property portal – found at the web address www.findaproperty.com/ is another of the most popular online resources for people looking to buy or rent – either in this country or overseas. Again, in addition to providing information about available properties everywhere from Europe to Africa, the site also contains information about savings that can be made through currency exchange, and the French Leaseback scheme.

World Properties

As the name of the site indicates, this offers information and listings of available properties across the world. Like Find a Property all of the properties listed on the site are represented by agencies subject to regulation according to a Code of Ethics – which helps to protect those buying from the more unscrupulous end of the property market – something which can be a particular concern when you are looking to buy a home overseas.
